The 2022 Honda Passport and the 2022 Buick Envision are a pair of 2-row SUVs that offer space and upscale features. Here’s how they compare.
2022 Honda Passport
2022 Honda Passport Starting Price: $37,870 | Price yours or View listings near you
Above Average: Muscular standard V6 engine; available torque-vectoring all-wheel drive; rugged new styling; great Honda resale value.
Below Average: Lackluster fuel economy; high starting price for its class.
Consensus: The Honda Passport is a good-looking 5-passenger SUV that is a great hauler in even front-wheel-drive (FWD) configuration. When equipped with all-wheel drive (AWD) and the new TrailSport package, it’s a great weekend warrior that can haul the family and tow up to 5,000 pounds.
2022 Buick Envision
2022 Buick Envision Starting Price: $31,500 | Price yours or View listings near you
Above Average: Powerful engine; stylish exterior; luxury touches at a lower price.
Below Average: Sport Touring package is appearance only; best for four passengers, not five; some features are not available in the base trim.
Consensus: A compact crossover SUV, the 2022 Buick Envision offers a bit of luxury at a more mainstream price point. The ride focuses more on comfort than sport, and it’s better for four rather than five passengers.
Passport vs. Envision: Space and Luxury
Honda Passport
Offering “just-right” proportions and impressive drive capabilities, the Honda Passport is the right vehicle for many families. It was reintroduced for the 2019 model year and for 2022 it gets a few rugged updates, plus it looks more like the recently updated Honda Ridgeline pickup. It can be had with HDP (Honda Performance Development) accessories to add more personality.
Able to accommodate five passengers and plenty of cargo, the Passport has a well-sorted and award-winning 3.5-liter V6 engine and a smooth-shifting 9-speed automatic transmission. There’s no question why it retains its value year after year.
The sophisticated torque-vectoring AWD system with 4-mode Intelligent Traction Management is a standout feature that gives the Passport some real talent when it comes to mild off-roading. It’s capable of tackling various terrain like sand, mud, and snow.
The big update for 2022 is the addition of the TrailSport model. Its Honda’s first entry in the TrailSport sub-brand, which for now is largely focused on off-road styling. It uses a slightly wider track and more aggressive off-road tires and adds a unique grille, wheels, and front and rear fascia. Unfortunately, no major mechanical upgrades come with the package, though Honda has hinted that there will be more off-road capability to come.
The base Sport trim model includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and an 8-inch infotainment system. Essentially a shorter, 2-row version of the Honda Pilot, the Passport has a roomy cabin thanks to its generous width and traditional upright SUV styling. This boxier shape also translates into plenty of cargo room with a 77.9-cubic-foot capacity with the second row stowed.
Buick Envision
With a number of SUVs in the Buick family, the 2022 Buick Envision falls between the Encore GX and the Enclave. Seating is for five, but the Envision is still probably best for carrying four in comfort.
Priced more like a mainstream compact crossover, the Envision feels more refined, like an entry-luxury model. Its 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder makes a decent amount of power at 228 horses. Its delivery is smooth rather than sporty, and the ride is tuned for quiet and comfort. Inside, the Envision has high-quality materials, with even the base trim’s cloth being soft and smooth.
Standard features include an 8-inch infotainment system, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM satellite radio, and active noise cancellation. Every Envision also comes standard with the Buick Driver Confidence Plus safety suite, which includes lane-keeping assist, forward-collision alert, lane-change alert with blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.
Upper trims get amenities like leather seats, a Bose premium audio system, a 360-degree camera, and a larger touchscreen. A Sport Touring package adds special wheels, badging, and grille, but does not include performance improvements.
