Passport vs. Bronco: Capable and Comfortable
Honda Passport
Offering “just-right” proportions and sterling drive capabilities, the Honda Passport is the right vehicle for many families. We expect it to remain largely unchanged (with a few new packages) for 2022.
Able to swallow five passengers, it has a well-sorted and award-winning 3.5-liter V6 engine and a smooth-shifting 9-speed automatic transmission. There’s no question why it retains its value year after year.
The sophisticated torque-vectoring AWD with 4-mode Intelligent Traction Management ($2,000) is a standout feature that gives the Passport some real talent when it comes to mild off-roading. It’s equally capable under rough conditions, including sand, mud, or snow.
The base Sport trim model includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and an 8-inch infotainment system. Essentially a shorter, 2-row version of the Honda Pilot, the Passport has a roomy cabin thanks to its generous width and traditional upright SUV styling. This boxier shape also translates into plenty of cargo room with a 77.9-cubic-foot capacity with the second row stowed.
New for 2022 is the TrailSport which uses a slightly wider track and more aggressive off-road tires to enhance the Passport’s already credible off-road performance. While it’s heavy on the appearance aspect, the new trim level promises more off-road-oriented hardware in subsequent models.
Ford Bronco
The Bronco SUV focuses on off-road capability. It comes in 2- and 4-door body styles. Its aesthetic is inspired by the original 1960s era Bronco with added technology and engineering that make it an entirely modern SUV. A variety of trims and options mean it can get pricey fast.
Base power comes from a 2.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that makes 275 horsepower (or 300 with premium fuel), and 315 lb-ft of torque, while the optional 2.7-liter turbocharged V6 makes 310 horses and 400 lb-ft of torque. Buyers of the 4-cylinder can opt for a 7-speed manual transmission or a 10-speed automatic. The latter is the only transmission on the V6.
Bronco’s appeal is further enhanced by the ability to remove the roof panels and doors or lower the soft-top for off-road motoring. While the 4-door offers more room and passenger comfort, the 2-door model is much truer to the look and feel of the original.
In our review, we note Bronco is a bit rough on the road, and body roll is a thing. Road noise, however, isn’t terrible and the Bronco is more composed on tarmac than say, its main rival, the Jeep Wrangler. A lot of tech is packed into the Bronco to help you become a better offroader, too. We really liked the more-than-a-thousand trail maps that are available in the nav system, which you can access offline.
