The Tesla Model Y has become the best-selling car in Europe in September (2022), a first for the company which experienced a tripling in sales compared to this time last year. The Model Y beat popular legacy combustion engine cars with 29,000 units sold. This compared favorably to the next best-selling car, the Peugeot 208 which sold 19,00 units. The Model Y is manufactured at Tesla’s recently established European Gigfactory in Grünheide, Brandenburg, Germany.

Industry-wide supply chain issues have bludgeoned much of the European car industry, not least Tesla which relies on the Chinese-made Model 3 to keep its European demand stocked to satisfy demand. However, China is going through extreme Covid related lockdowns on a regular basis and this has exacerbated Model 3 supply.

Nevertheless, sales of the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 still managed to rise close to 42,000 combined in September outselling its nearest rival, the Volkswagen ID4 and ID3, by over four times.

Tesla is still way ahead of the competition in terms of technology. However, at some point, the competition will increase, but not for another 5 maybe even 10 years, that is how ahead Tesla is.
